Step 5: Install the throttle

Now you will mount the throttle on the handlebars. If you changed the number of gears, you also need to replace the shifter and adjust the gears.

Remove grip and controls​

Remove the grip, brake lever, and shifter from the right side of the handlebar. Loosen the screws with a hex key.

Plan the placement​

Decide where the throttle should sit. If you chose a thumb throttle, you need to decide whether it should sit before or after the shifter.

Typical order from the grip inward:

  1. Grip, outermost
  2. Brake lever
  3. Throttle, thumb throttle or twist throttle instead of the grip
  4. Shifter

Mount the throttle and shifter​

Slide the throttle and shifter on in the order you decided. Tighten them so they sit firmly.

If you chose a thumb throttle, put the grip back on as well.

If you chose a twist throttle, it replaces the grip.

Ergonomics

Test your grip on the handlebar and adjust the angles so the throttle feels natural to use while riding.

Other handlebar components​

If you have other accessories that should go back on, such as a bell, light mount, or bike computer, install them now.

Replace the shift cable, if you changed the shifter​

Skip this if you kept the same shifter

If your donor bike had the same number of gears, 6 or 7, and you kept the old shifter, you can skip to Done!

If you changed to a new shifter, you need to replace the shift cable. Follow the steps below.

Release the old cable at the rear derailleur​

Loosen the screw that secures the shift cable in the rear derailleur.

Pull out the cable​

Pull the old cable out of the rear derailleur.

Pull the cable out of the housing​

Pull the entire old cable out of the cable housing all the way up to the old shifter.

Feed in the new cable​

Take the new cable, which is attached to the new shifter, and feed it through the cable housing all the way down to the rear derailleur.

Attach the cable at the rear derailleur​

Thread the cable through the rear derailleur clamp, tension the derailleur by hand just enough, and tighten the screw.

Trim the cable and add an end cap​

Cut the cable so that a suitable length remains, about 3 to 5 cm, and crimp on the end cap that came with the shifter.

Adjust the gears​

To make all gears work correctly, you need to adjust the rear derailleur.
